On a New Road

Happy 15th!Tuesday May 25, 2010
A comment on my previous blog entry pointed out that Java's 15th birthday is right about now. It's been quite a roller coaster. Seeing what people have done with Java over the years has been totally awe-inspiring.

Now is also roughly the time when JavaOne would have been happening. Mostly because it's fun (and great therapy), I whipped up a couple of images that Oracle could use for t-shirts if they'd like. I'd like to think that they'll pull a rabbit out of a hat when they do their version of JavaOne in the fall, and end up with something cool and interesting.

Thanks to those who "liked" me on the 25 years of .com site. I'm not quite 10x Oracle's score, but I'm pretty comfortably ahead.

James, I've had the honor to meet you in person when you were at Sun Tech days (2005 - Bangalore, India). I'm an ex-Sun employee and I feel its not right if I don't leave a comment here! You & Sun are the reason for my existence, James. I provide decent food and shelter to my family because of you and Sun. I owe a lot to you, but I know I won't be able to pay you back. I know you know this - you changed life, a lot of it!!

15 years!!! The year was 1997 when I first experimented with Java. I had been a Win32 VC++ developer till then, but after Java, one thing led to another and I moved over to Unix and developed using Java for over a decade. Those are the days which will remain etched into my psyche the rest of my life. Thank you for helping me remember this particular part of my past.

I remember when Java has released as an alpha (beta?), and I worked on porting it to OS/2. It was pretty crude back then, considering the modern sophistication of the HotSpot JVM, and how the JDK libraries have grown over the years. But even then Java was a compelling idea. I still have my Java 10th Year Birthday luggage tag from JavaOne five years ago. I suspect JavaOne won't be the same this fall; it just seems unnatural to hold it outside of May/June!
