On a New Road

Reliable Multicast and 9/11Wednesday September 14, 2011
I managed to avoid most of the maudlin moaning and jingoistic screaming that took over the media last weekend for the 10th anniversary of 9/11. But I couldn't help thinking about Phil Rosenzweig, who was on AA 11. He was a great guy and a valued coworker. He worked at Sun on the east coast, so I didn't get to see him much, but we traded a fair amount of email. He was a major force behind the Java Reliable Multicast API - that work took a huge hit when his plane hit the world trade center. He is missed.

We built a little memorial to him at the Sun campus in Menlo Park. It's now the new Facebook campus. So, folks at Facebook: take care of it and think of Phil as you pass by.

Comments:

Phil's memorial bench in Burlington was moved when Sun sold the campus. It was donated to Phil's synagogue in Acton, Ma. In addition, the town of Acton dedicated a memorial this last weekend to the two Acton residents lost in 9/11, Phil and Madeline Sweeney, who was a flight attendant on flight 11, along with all the others killed on that terrible day.

If I click the link (Gosling, James-http://labs.oracle.com/research/features/tenyears/volcd/papers/gosling.htm), It is redirecting to labs.oracle.com. Good comedy :)

I think the memorial was moved to the Santa Clara campus some time this year.

Correct, Phil's memorial is now right in the middle of Santa Clara campus, in front of the clock tower.

Yes, the bench is in Santa Clara. I went down there to remember Phil on 9/11. http://anywhoidigress.com/2011/09/11/phil/

Sorry to hear, Sun also lost somebody on 9/11. I heard on Twitter, at least one BEA employee at the time was in one of the planes. That makes at least 2 former employees of what is now Oracle.

Thanks for posting this, James. I always think about Phil on 9/11. How ironic that Sun had hundreds of employees in the Twin Towers who all got out alive, but poor Phil was on the plane that hit the buildings.
